" Player was shot by a Grunt "

"Goons with probes inserted into their pleasure centers; wired up so when they kill someone, they get a paroxysms of ecstasy. In essence, customized serial killers. Easy to kill, and they tote shotgun shells. It's like a little Christmas each time you kill one!"

The Grunt is the first enemy you will encounter in Quake, alongside the Rottweiler. He moves fairly slowly, has particularly low health and packs a mere shotgun. Not only is his attack just a shotgun, it calls a FireBullets value of 4 rather than the players 6, and he also aims slightly behind the player. Despite these shortcomings, on death he will drop a backpack containing 5 shells, turning an ammunition profit for the accurate (or melee) player.
Grunts though easy, can pose quite a threat in large groups, which you see very little of in Quake itself, but is common in user made Base maps. Though inaccurate and weak, in groups the hitscan attack can catch a player off guard who is usually more concerned with the laser projectiles of the Enforcer.

The Grunt is one of a few Quake monsters who possesses more animation frames than the code makes use of. In this case,
he has frames reloading his shotgun, which has been utilized by numerous mods where they keep track of how many rounds
the grunt has fired, or to display a switching of weapons in that particular mod.
In Quake 1, the Grunt is an undead soldier, rewired with a probe in its brain that makes this zombie happy with every kill it makes, armed with a Shotgun. They usually only appear in the first level of each episode, but they also appeared in E1M2.

Although considered an enemy in the Quake games, in Quake Reloaded (a demo of the first level of Quake 1), the Grunt is
actually considered to be a friend (hence the "Watch and learn!" and "What's going wrong with you?" quotes).

Grunts are roughly the same size as the player and still appear vaguely human. Their skin is still human-like, but they have
a blood-soaked chest, and thin beige armor.
In combat, a Grunt will run to close range and fire a single shotgun blast before moving to fire again. The cocking of their
shotgun is easily recognized, so if they cock the gun, you can tell a blast isn't too far behind. Since their weapons are
"instant effect", you cannot dodge unless you move before they fire. They seem to have quite an affection to undead
Rottweilers.

Grunts have extremely low HP, which means that you can kill them with two shotgun blasts or axe hits. Their shotguns
are pretty weak, even without armor.
One or two Grunts will barely harm you, but a large group of them can inflict some good damage, especially if they fire
at once. If you do encounter a large group, take out your Nailgun and kill them from a distance. Their shotguns are
ineffective at medium or long range.

"Easy to kill, and they tote shotgun shells. It's like a little Christmas each time you blow a Grunt away!"
