Spacewalk, SmashQuake, StealthQuake

Release of Spacewalk

Spacewalk has finally been released by CocoT. Spacewalk challenges players with increasingly difficult puzzles. The mod is "inspired by the Japanese freeware "stroke" and challenges you with levels of increasing difficulty in which you have to find your way to the exit while grabbing artifacts along the way and making sure you don't step on the same platforms twice".

SmashQuake at Whitehot

SmashQuake is running at whitehot.quakeone.com. SmashQuake is a king of the hill mod by Canadian*Sniper. "Using the same gameplay physics as Super Smash Brothers. The game is King of the Hill where you have to shoot your opponents off the stage to earn points. This is the only way you can KO someone. Your velocity when hurt is determined by how much damage you've accumulated."

StealthQuake

StealthQuake is a retelling of Quake if it were a stealth survival horror game. Adrenaline will affect your vision according to how often you get caught and how many monsters are near you.

Stealth plays a huge role in StealthQuake because you are no match for any of the Quake monsters that get in your way. You are given a lot of options towards getting through each map, such as throwing rocks or whistling to divert a monster's attention, backstabbing humanoid monsters, or not making any sound as you sneak by monsters. The visuals, sounds, and gameplay in this mod are breathtaking.

Qrack 1.85

Qrack 1.85 has been released with several important additions/features including new effects, extended mouse button support, ability to turn DirectInput and m_smooth on/off in-client, fast startup, an important internet connection code fix (particularly for DSL) and more.

Also notable: Qrack should run on all Intel display adapters. If you have not been able to run Qrack in the past due to an Intel display adapter, it will run now. (ProQuake will be getting this fix shortly).

MH's Blog

MH has a very informative blog where he is working on several ground-breaking ideas in his MHQuake engine.

Gooland Returns

One of the oldest servers ever has returned. The ancient Gooland Artifact server, with the same data files as 9 years ago (?) is at gooland.gotdns.com.

Single Player Poll

Quaddicted has a vote for the best single player release in 2008. Travail is so far leading the poll, followed by WarpSpasm and Breakfast at Twilight. Not leading is a very great map released in December called The Hand That Feeds You that is one of the best standalone base maps, maybe ever.

Development and Extras

MH has a engine modification tutorial on improving skyboxes; he is the author of the MHQuake engine, that pioneered many different engine improvements. Slot Zero has released RuneQuake 1.3.

ProQuake 3.99g now has enhanced connectivity; no one should have to use the -ip parameter ... ever. Rook has taken the "anti-wallhack" code and improved it. Expect Qrack to connect to ProQuake's "cheat-free" mode within the next month.

Art, Sites Down and More

BuurVrouw has the graced the forums with her drawings and art. She has long been known in the European Quake community and has long made Quake related drawings.

Canadian Sniper reveals the truth behind gl_doubleeyes and the apparent lack of a modern day purpose for it.

MoonDrunk, the master of so many widely-used replacement graphics/textures, has upgraded his web site. It looks awesome.

QuakeSrc.org went down and has stayed down. The Quake Wiki went down with it. It is still available at an alternate location, almost by sheer coincidence. Quakeworld.nu went down for a couple of weeks but has returned.

Update: Speaknow running Anti-Wallhack Server
Site News by Baker on Sat, Dec 22, 2007 02:25pm
Update: SlotZero implemented anti-wallhack on Shmack on January 2.

The Chicago CAx server, speaknow.quakeone.com, is now running the new ProQuake server with the anti-wallhack measures.

(Some of the credit should go to Rampage, who is very vocal about wanting this on servers.)

In addition, Slot Zero is considering the anti-wallhack modification at Shmack.

Anti-Wallhack Example Video

Phenom has made an illustrative video showing a demonstration of the anti-wallhack code at work using a pak2 model and transparent walls. Note that when the player should not be seen, the player is not seen.

New ProQuake 3.91 Anti-Wallhack Server
Site News by Baker on Fri, Dec 21, 2007 01:50pm
Anti-Wallhack Server

A great feature first introduced in DarkPlaces (*) has been ported to ProQuake server. The server simply does not send player information to connected clients that are not visible to that specific player.

Wallhacking and "pak2 cheat" models are rendered irrelevant.

Any client (Qrack, DarkPlaces, ProQuake, JoeQuake, etc.) can connect to a server running this, it is not restricted.

This server executable is currently running at Bomber (bomber.quakeone.com, NOT the same server as Rage) in the USA and Flanders DM in Europe.

ProQuake Server 3.91 Downloads:

Executable (Windows) 0.5 MB | Source Code

Additional capabilities include optional server side ip-masking, which is more effective than mod ip masking.

The anti-wallhacking measures are easy to implement into the source, for Linux see testing thread for details.

* Actual code ported from FTEQW implementation.
